Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest, drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of back pain, neck pain, joint pain, headaches, and other neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Chiropractic is a natural healing method that allows the body to heal without medications, injections or surguries. This is done by correcting misalignments of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems through spinal and joint manipulation. Chiropractic is safe and effective and has helped millions of people to restore their bodies to a greater level of health and wholeness. Chiropractic is a wonderful natural health care technique that is essential for all people from young to old.

How Does it Work?
Joint's that are misaligned or damaged may disrupt the nervous system pathway causing inflammation, pressure on nerves, muscular imbalance and subsequent medical problems. Chiropractic adjustments restore the proper mechancial structure of these joints to allow the body to run at optimal capacity.

Is This a Chiropractic Case?
Chiropractic is a suitable first choice solution for many conditions. Medications may mask symptoms, cause unpleasant side-effects, and may not fix the underlying cause of the issue. Surgery requires long recovery times, causes scar tissue build-up, and is far more dangerous to undergo that chiropractic care. Visit our Education Page or Health Blog for more details on specific conditions. Here are just a few examples of conditions that may benefit from chiropractic care.

Childhood Conditions: Colic, asthma, ear infections, scoliosis
Sports Injuries: Strains and sprains, plantar fasciitis, chronic dislocations
Pregnancy: Sciatica, natural pain relief, Webster technique to reduce intrauerine constraint
Body Systems: Heart palpitations, stomach problems, high blood pressure
Women's Health: Menstrual cramps, menopausal symptoms, increase fertility
Chronic Conditions: Carpal tunnel, frozen shoulder, migraines, backaches
Back/Neck Problems: Disc protrusion, nerve irritation, migraines
Car Accidents: Whiplash injuries, muscle soreness, stiffness in joints

Do Chiropractic Adjustments Hurt?
Desired Health Chiropractic offers very gentle chiropractic techniques. The adjustments are comfortable for all ages, including little babies. Many patients seek care at our office because they are nervous about chiropractic treatments. We understand that apprehension and strive to give all our patients a great experience so they can benefit from chiropractic care.

Is There A Reaction Following an Adjustment?

The most common reaction to chiropractic care is a slight aching or mild soreness in the joints or muscles that were adjusted. This is due, in part, to the joints beinning to once again move within their normal range of motion. This is a natural response to the treatment and ice should be applied to the area. Any discomfort from the adjustment should subside within a couple of days.

How Long Will It Take?
Every person responds differently to chiropractic treatment depending on their condition, when it started, other health problems, and cooperation with treatment and home instruction. Chiropractic works by freeing the nervous system pathway from irritation so information can travel throughout your body. Depending on the source of irritation involved, this may take time to correct the problem.

We can give you an estimated time on when to expect results, but much of that is up to you. You must understand your chiropractic treatment plan and follow through with the recommended frequency and number of adjustments for optimum results. Once you are pain-free, you may not be completely healthy yet. To prevent further issues, it is important to fully correct the problem that caused your symptoms in the first place. At Desired Health Chiropractic, our goal is to get you out of pain as quickly as possible but also make sure that the body is working properly so symptoms are less likely to occur.

What Is Activator Methods?
The Activator Method Technique® is a gentle, low-force approach to chiropractic care. The technique has been used safely on clients of all ages since the late 1960s, bringing relief to people with a variety of health concerns.
Activator Methods Technique® utilizes a small spring-loaded adjusting instrument to deliver a focused corrective impulse into the dysfunctional segment.  The power necessary to move and adjust the joint is developed by the speed of the instrument’s thrust not by a high force.  The Activator instrument is so quick that it accelerates ahead of the body’s tendency to tighten up and resist the adjustment.  So, although the Activator instrument produces a very effective thrust, it is felt as a very gentle sensation only.

Activator Methods adjustments are suitable and comfortable for all types of people, ranging from pregnant women, babies and children, to athletes and seniors.

Is It Expensive? Will Insurance Cover Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care has been proven to be one of the most cost-effective methods of health care today. But, as with all services, cost varies depending on provider and location. Most insurances cover chiropractic care. However, please check with your insurance provider to find out what sort of coverage you may have on your insurance plan.

Also feel free to contact us at Desired Health Chiropractic to learn more about payment options. Many patients decide to pay directly for care as they discover chiropractic to be very affordable.

What Insurance Does Desired Health Chiropractic Accept?

What Can I Expect At My First Visit?
We offer very gentle chiropractic care for patients who are in a lot of pain or apprehensive of adjustments. The initial visit includes a history and physical examination prior to the adjustment. At Desired Health Chiropractic, we take the time to address all your concerns prior to treatment. Please visit our New Patient Page for more information.

I Don't Like the Cracking/Popping Method. Is There Another Way?
Dr. Desiree Van Bogart is Proficiency Rated in the Activator Methods Technique®, which is a gentle, scientifically researched chiropractic method of adjusting. This method gets results very quickly and does not involve any twisting or cracking to your back or neck.

Is It Safe If I Am Pregnant?
Chiropractic care is safe if you are pregnant. If you have pain during pregnancy, chiropractic adjustments are safer than taking pain medications. In fact, chiropractic care can make pregnancy more comfortable and make delivery easier for both the mother and the baby. Chiropractic care is also great for newborns and postpartum mothers!

What Education Do Chiropractors Have?
Chiropractors attend a four year program during which they learn basic and clinical sciences, diagnosis, and nutrition. In addition they are trained in the chiropractic technique. Once they graduate they are awarded their Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) Degree and each must pass a rigorous four part National Board Examination. Should they pass the chiropractor must apply to a governmental or professional licensing board and pass another test before being allowed to practice. Then chiropractors are requred to complete regular postgraduate instruction for license renewal. This also keeps the doctor up to date on all the latest research and adjustment techniques.

Do I Need to See my Medical Doctor Before Coming to a Chiropractor?
No. Insurance companies usually do not require a referral to see a chiropractor. According to the Center of Studies in Health Policy..."The Doctor of Chiropractic can provide all three levels of primary care interventions and therefore is a primary care provider, as are MDs and DOs. The Doctor of Chiropractic is a gatekeeper to the health care system and an independent practitioner who provides primary care services. The Doctor of Chiropractic's office is a direct access portal of entry to the full scope of service."
