Family Health Focus
Now that March is in full swing, we may feel a bit sluggish as we navigate the start daylight saving time. Springing ahead can make us want to go back and reclaim that “lost” hour.
Here are some great tips for parents to help their children through:
- Gradual Adjustments:
-
- Start Early:
- A week or so before the time change, begin shifting your child’s bedtime and wake-up time in 10-15 minute increments each day.
- This gradual approach helps their bodies adapt more smoothly.
- Mealtime Shifts:
- Adjust meal times along with bedtime and wake-up times to reinforce the new schedule.
- Start Early:
- Optimize Sleep Environment:
-
- Darkness is Key:
- Ensure your child’s room is dark at bedtime. Blackout curtains can be very helpful, especially during the “spring forward” when evenings are lighter.
- Consistent Bedtime Routine:
- Maintain a calming bedtime routine, such as a warm bath, reading a book, or quiet music. This signals to their bodies that it’s time to sleep.
- Limit Screen Time:
- The blue light emitted from screens can interfere with sleep. Avoid screen time at least an hour before bedtime.
- Darkness is Key:
- Encourage Natural Light:
-
- Morning Sunlight:
- Expose your child to natural sunlight in the morning. This helps regulate their circadian rhythm.
- Outdoor Play:
- Encourage outdoor play during the day to help them adjust to the new daylight hours.
- Morning Sunlight:
- Be Patient and Flexible:
-
- Expect Adjustment Period:
- It can take a week or more for children to fully adjust. Be patient and understanding if they are a little cranky or tired.
- Maintain Consistency:
- try to maintain consistent routines, even on weekends, this will help children to adjust.
- Expect Adjustment Period:
- Additional Tips:
-
- Stay Hydrated and Eat Healthy: Proper nutrition and hydration can help with the adjustment.
- Melatonin (with caution):
- In some cases, a pediatrician might recommend a small dose of melatonin to help with sleep. Always consult with your child’s doctor before giving them any supplements.
By following these tips, parents can help their children navigate the Daylight-Saving Time change with greater ease.
