Community Scan – Enjoy Spring

Early spring offers a wonderful opportunity to get young children outdoors, exploring the changing season. Here are some enjoyable activities:

Nature Exploration:

  • Nature Scavenger Hunt:
    • Create a list of spring items to find: budding flowers, new leaves, insects, birds, etc. This encourages observation and discovery.
  • Flower and Leaf Exploration:
    • Examine emerging flowers and leaves. Discuss their colors, textures, and scents.
    • Collect fallen petals or leaves for nature-inspired crafts.
  • Insect Hunting:
    • Gently look for insects under rocks or logs. Discuss their roles in the ecosystem.
    • Observe birds and their spring behaviors.
  • Gardening:
    • Plant seeds or seedlings. Even simple tasks like watering can be enjoyable.
    • Create a small container garden.
  • Nature Walks:
    • Take walks in local parks or trails, focusing on the sights and sounds of spring.
    • Go on a rainbow walk, trying to find all the colors of the rainbow in nature.

    • These classic activities are always a hit.
    • Sidewalk chalk allows for creative expression.
  • Outdoor Games:
    • Play simple games like tag, hide-and-seek, or hopscotch.
    • Fly a kite.
  • Picnics:
    • Enjoy a simple picnic in a park or backyard.
    • This combines outdoor time with a meal.
  • Puddle Jumping:
    • Embrace rainy days with puddle jumping in rain boots.
  • Bike Riding:
    • If they have bikes or tricycles, let them ride around in safe areas.

Creative Activities:

  • Nature Crafts:
    • Use collected natural items to create collages or other crafts.
    • Make nature paint brushes.
  • Mud Kitchen:
    • If you don’t mind a bit of mess, a mud kitchen provides hours of sensory play.
  • Cloud Watching:
    • Lay back and use your imaginations to find shapes in the clouds.

Tips for Enjoying Early Spring Outdoors:

  • Dress Appropriately: Early spring weather can be unpredictable, so dress in layers.
  • Safety First: Supervise children closely, especially near water or traffic.
  • Embrace the Weather: Even rainy days can be fun with the right attitude and gear.
  • Keep it Simple: Young children are easily entertained by simple pleasures.
  • Take it slow: Young children like to investigate things, so allow plenty of time for exploration.
